We have built a Mobile Rope Walk, a traditional human powered method of making 3 & 4 strand rope which we take to museums and shows as a heritage craft demonstration. We also offer Bucket making and wheelwrighting. These can be one off 1hr craft talks, or a continual demo throughout the day. We take the opportunity to mention lots of background information so definitely comes under the edutainment category.
Rope making is in many ways the perfect craft demonstration, 10 minutes from start to a finished piece of rope, and where visitors are encouraged to get involved in the process. Our particular favourite is when we rope with white, purple, and green strands, the Suffragette colours, which gives us a chance to sneak in a little history conversation, however we also do football team, school, and corporate colours whatever works to to suit the occasion.
At the end of the demo depending upon the funding, the visitors can have the rope or we can show them how to make a skipping ropes or other useful items.
